Mildred Jones Obituary

Loving Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Sister, In-Law, Cousin, and Friend

On Friday, October 23, 2020, Mildred Lorraine Jones, beloved wife of the late William Henry Jones, Sr., was peacefully called home to be with the Lord at Medstar Montgomery Medical Center, Olney, MD. Mildred was born on April 24, 1938 to the late Doris and Augustus Johnson.

Mildred was a graduate of Harriet Tubman High School, class of 1957, which was the only black high school in Howard County. She began her career at Montgomery Ward, Red Cross, Harriet Tubman High and Guilford Elementary. After a period of being a stay-at-home mother, she returned to work at Clemens Crossing Elementary School as a cafeteria monitor, which she truly had a passion for working with the children.

As a young woman, Mildred accepted the Christian faith and was welcomed into the Locust United Methodist Church in Columbia, MD, where she was an active member until her illness. She served as an active participant with the United Methodist Women and Men, to include planning of yearly crab feasts, bus trips and other social activities. Despite her lengthy illness, she continued to contribute from home.

Mildred, affectionately known as “Tim”, was a very loving person with a heart of gold. She always shared her concern for others and was happy to go out of her way for both family and friends. She married the love of her life, William “Bray” Jones, Sr., on June 22, 1957. From this union six children were raised. To say she simply loved her family would be an understatement; the adoration she felt for her family could only be surpassed by the great love and respect they felt for her in return.

Mildred was the planner of the many family bus trips, cookouts, family reunions, and game nights (Po-Ke-No). To highlight a few: Stone Mountain, Atlanta, GA, Niagara Falls, Canada, Virginia Beach, VA, York Fair, PA every year and Mountain Gate Family Restaurant, Thurmont, MD. Her home was the place everybody would gather and anyone that knew Tim knew you were staying outside for extended periods of time.

Preceded in death by her husband, William “Bray” Jones Sr., sister, Dorothy “Dot” Johnson and brother, Milton “Mike” Johnson.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Betty “Wee Wee” Johnson, Cheryl Parker, Deborah Powell (Jerome), Carol Jones, William “Junebug” Jones, Jr. and Anthony “Tony” Jones; grandchildren LaToshka, Kamesha (William), Octavia, Antuan (Lydia), Terrell, Marcus and Chardae; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Eugene Johnson (Janie);  sister, Shirley Plummer (Wy), in-laws, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mildred will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
