Philip Lautenschlager Obituary

On Wednesday November 9, 2022, at age 87, Philip Jean Lautenschlager passed away peacefully at his longtime home in Bethesda Maryland. He had been under the care of his daughter, Livia, for several years at his home. He was born in Liberty, MO, the first child of John and Edna Lautenschlager. He graduated from William Jewel College in 1953 with a major in Mathematics and minor in French.

He is survived by son Adam Lautenschlager and his wife, Monique, both of Duluth MN, daughter Livia Helene Lautenschlager of Bethesda, grandson Max Atticus Lautenschlager, of Bethesda and granddaughter Arielle Lautenschlager of Duluth, MN. His younger brother David Lautenschlager and three nephews, all of Missouri, also survive him. In addition, his sister's son, Paul, and her daughter, Holly, survive him.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Virginia (2009) and former wife Eleanor Takahashi Inskip (2019). His marriages to Eleanor and Linda Frederick Stutzman both ended in amicable divorce.

Phil honorably served his country for a number of years as a Naval Reservist. In the early 60s, Phil and his first wife, Eleanor, relocated to the Washington DC area where he began his 42 year career with the Federal Government in the Dept of Commerce as a Computer Programmer. He worked most of his career in two different downtown DC offices but the final 10 years his office was in downtown Silver Spring. In the early 80s Phil and a younger co-worker cycled 13 miles each way to the DC office...just because they could!

A lifelong student, Phil had many interests and continued learning up to the time of his death. He listened to lectures on YouTube covering a wide range of scientific disciplines in his final years when his eyesight failed him!

A seasoned gardener of both vegetables, berries and flowers, Phil was especially proud of the daylilies he collected over the years. Other interests he avidly pursued were photography, Tai Chi, cycling, hiking, rock climbing, home improvement projects and fixing most anything mechanical.
