Virgie Gittens Obituary

On Friday, May 31, 2019, Virgie Jeannette Hawkins Gittens entered eternal rest at Sand Cherry Manor assisted living facility.Born May 10,1943 in Stewart town Maryland, she was the seventh daughter of the late Kermit Roosevelt, Sr. and Emma Virginia Hawkins. She was predeceased by sisters Christine Dorsey, Bernettea Ricks, Ruby Howard, Wilma Jane Hawkins and brother Richard Hawkins. Virgie attended Longview Elementary school and was in the first kindergarten class, with her favorite teacher Ms. Althea “Conway” Plummer. Longview school was part of the consolidated schools in the Laytonville, Stewart town, Emory Grove and Gaithersburg areas. As a child, Virgie was outgoing, adventurous and mischievous. She was very friendly and enjoyed meeting and talking to people. Virgie made friends easily due to her engaging personality. She attended Lincoln Junior High school and played saxophone in the carver high school under the direction of Mr. Herbert Smith. Virgie Attended and graduated from Richard Montgomery high school in 1961 She was athletic and excelled in volleyball, playing along with her good friend. Dot Prather. Virgie also enjoyed playing field hockey. As a teenager, Virgie was inspired to sew by her mother and her aunts. Later Virgie took Sewing lessons to improve her skills and became an outstanding seamstress. She produced beautiful professional quality outfits. The family was especially proud of her when she made the bride and bridesmaids dresses for one of her nieces wedding. Virgie attended Sunday school at Stewart town Untied Methodist Church. She was a member of the Methodist Young Fellowship group and was a member of Brooke Grove United Methodist Church. Virgie worked in retail for several years. As an adult, Virgie was employed by the Maryland Department of Motor Vehicles until her retirement. In her position as Title clerk, she became the “go to” person when friends and family needed assistance. Virgie Married Joseph “joe” Williams in 1964 and from that union, her daughter Denne “dee Cassandra Powell was born. Later, Virgie married Evaristo “Rick” Gittens in 1989 and the couple lived happily in Brooklyn NY before relocating to Florida in 1994. Due to health concerns, Virgie moved back to Maryland after her husband Rick’s Death in 2014. Even after her return to Maryland to be among family and friends her health continued to decline requiring her placement in an assisted living facility. Virgie leaves to mourn her pass her daughter Denee “Dee” Powell; four grandsons, steffon, Aaron, Niles, and Quinton; and Four great-grandchildren. Also mourning her passing are her siblings; Mary Belle Lyons (James), Kermit Hawkins, Jr., and Margaret Simons (James); three devoted friends- Carolyn Smith.
